As a Texans fan, I am most heated after watching them blow the game against the Tennessee Titans. I mean they truly blew it. They had many opportunities to win this game or take control of it and each time...they choked.
Who's fault was it?
Blaming Schaub for making passing decisions that a High School level Junior Varsity back-up Quarterback could make is one option, but I don't think he's the total culprit. Sure, he could have done better AND he was so intimidated by the Titans that he had a TERRIBLE 1st Quarter AND he has NO IDEA how to get the ball in the end zone, but he's not at fault for this loss.
So, who is?
Not Steve Slaton, I can tell you that much. Slaton played incredibly and played his heart out all the way down to being the only player who didn't give up on chasing Titan's CB Finnigan on his 99 yard INT return. Slaton exploded onto the scene (AS I SAID HE WOULD), and made a strong claim to be the starting back and future at running back for this organization.
It wasn't the defense either. They were weak in the first half, but they truly stepped up in the second half to give the offense a NUMBER of chances to come back.
The fault...lies with Kubiak, and after his choices in this game, I am no short of thought that he should be canned and kicked to the curb. No one in their right mind should want someone coaching who made some of the mistakes that he made today.
Why so harsh? I'll give you 5 reasons he lost the game for the Texans.
1. Keeping Schaub in the Game- Track record going back to both games last year show that Schaub is horrible against the Titans. He should have been given that first Quarter to see if this year would be different and when it appeared things hadn't changed, Kubiak should have YANKED Schaub and replaced him with Rosenfels for the remainder of that game. Rosenfels' track record against the Titans is much stronger and includes 2 (count them) 2 fourth quarter come backs that were nearly wins against the Titans.
2. Where's the Challenge?- In the first half, Titans Quarterback, Kerry Collins launched a pass down the sidelines to Justin McCareins that was ruled a completion. He didn't even get ONE foot in, much less two. Kubiak and company didn't even flinch. The play should have been challenged without question and it's Kubiak's fumble in this one.
3. TAKE THE POINTS, YOU IDIOT!- The Texans were down by 12 at the end of the third quarter and were facing a 4th and a few in the Titan's redzone. Still with PLENTY OF TIME, Kubiak elects to go for the first down, rather than take the points. What the hell was he thinking? With 5 minutes left in the game, this is a smart choice, but not with a FULL QUARTER TO PLAY. After that, they were in scoring position two more times before the game was over. Going for it on 4th and 1 from the 1 and not making it and throwing a pick happened the next time. Regardless, had they taken the field goal two of those times, they would only have been down by 6 with Schaub in a much better position to NOT throw up a prayer and win the game on that last drive. YOU ALWAYS TAKE THE POINTS AGAINST A DEFENSE LIKE THAT, GARY! What's wrong with you?!?!?!
4. Playcalling- Kubiak's playcalling was absolutely horrendous. He called plays that made no sense in the situations and completely shattered any confidence that the team and fans were going to have in Matt Schaub. Way to go, Kub.
5. Where Are Your Hands?- He needs to work the receiving core harder than they have ever worked before and he should have been tearing them a new a$$hole in this game. There were 3 passes dropped in the Endzone that were perfectly catchable balls. Two by Andre Johnson and one by Owen Daniels. It comes down to the coaching of he and Kyle Shannehan. They looked like CRAP against a mediocre secondary.
What's even more sad, is that Demarcus Faggins even came into this game and we can't blame him because he never got burned. If someone is going to take the wrap for this debauchle...it's Coach Gary Kubiak and if the Texans have a losing record this year...Kubiak better be looking for a job.
This was the single WORST coached game I have seen in my entire life.......and I've seen some bad games.
Let's see what happens next week...We go 3-2 after the first 5 and I may reconsider my strong opinion.
