Oakland Raiders team (comprised solely of their draft choices from the last decade)

The Oakland Raiders have always made waves with their... uhm... what's a euphemism for "crappy"? ... their... interesting drafts. Their strategy of sorting by 40 time and picking the person at the top of the list when they draft hasn't paid off yet. Since their 2002 Super Bowl Appearance (yeah, its shocking to see Oakland was in the Super Bowl less than 10 years ago), they have yet to top 5 wins in a season. Speaking of that season, if you gave me a hundred guesses, I could not get it. Try it without looking. I'll give you the answer at the bottom of the page.

But, back on to the Raiders. If we were to comprise a team based solely on their draft picks for the 2000s, how would that look?

OFFENSE
QB
JaMarcus Russell(1st Round: 1st Pick: 2007)
Andrew Walter(3:5:2005)
Marques Tuiasosopo(2:28:2001)

RB
Darren McFadden(1:4:2008)
Michael Bush(4:1:2007)
Huggy Bear's Kid(3:31:2003)

WR
Darrius Heyward-Bey(1:7:2009)
Louis Murphy(4:24:2009)
Ken-Yon Rambo(7:29:2001) - Just because this name is awesome. He didn't make it in the NFL, but who wouldn't want a Black and Silver 88 Jersey with RAMBO on the back?

TE
Zach Miller(2:6:2007)
Doug Jolley(2:22:2002)

LT
Mario Henderson(3:26:2007)

LG
Robert Gallery(1:2:2004) (I know he was drafted as RT, but he plays left guard now, and they're really weak on the OL)

C
Jake Grove(2:12:2004)

RG
Paul McQuistan(3:5:2006)

RT
Langston Walker(2:20:2002)

DEFENSE
DE
Lamarr Houston(2:12:2010)
Matt Shaughnessy(3:7:2009)

DT
Anttaj Hawthorne(6:1:2005)
Junior Ioane(4:12:2000) -- Only Two DTs selected by Oakland since 2000 draft

LB
Rolando McClain(1:8:2010)
Kirk Morrison(3:14:2005)
Napoleon Harris(1:23:2002)
Thomas Howard(2:6:2006)

CB
Nnamdi Asomugha(1:31:2003) * Pro Bowl
Phillip Buchanon(1:17:2002)
Fabian Washington(1:23:2005) - Was kind of a toss up between the quick flameout CBs for the Raiders.

S
Michael Huff(1:7:2006)
Tyvon Branch(4:1:2008) - Gets kind of thin after Huff

SPECIAL TEAMS
K
Sebastian Janikowski(1:17:2000)

P
Shane Lechler(5:12:2000) * Pro Bowl

KR/PR
Johnnie Lee Higgins(3:34:2007)

--------------------------------------------

And there you have it. It became evident that the Raiders severely ignored their offensive line (none of their picks are starting in the NFL anywhere now) in the draft and missed on grabbing dynamic playmakers on Offense. They nailed the Nnamdi pick and McClain looks like he's going to be solid. But 11 years of drafts and two Pro Bowlers is a difficult record to defend.

In the same time period, here are the stars or solid contributors the Texans have grabbed:

Jabar Gaffney
Chester Pitts
Andre Johnson * - Pro Bowler
Dunta Robinson
Mario Williams * - Pro Bowler
DeMeco Ryans * - Pro Bowler
Owen Daniels * - Pro Bowler
Eric Winston
David Anderson
Amobi Okoye
Jacoby Jones
Duane Brown
Steve Slaton
Brian Cushing * - Pro Bowler

Oh yeah. Your 2002 NFL MVP... Rich Gannon!!!

  1. Dont forget David Carr who will be making a come back this year on the west coast when Singletary wakes up and realizes how disgustingly bad Alex Smith is...
