Calling 'Em Out: Head Coach Gary Kubiak

This week, I am calling out Head Coach Gary Kubiak.

I've been defending Kubiak as a coach for a few years now and been telling friends and other fans who haven't liked what he's been doing just to be patient. He has been building a team and they'll like the results if they hold on. This has been true to a point. Each year the team has gotten better since he has had the reigns and this year, the offense looks like they are playoff bound.

Now that the Texans have arguably the best offense in the NFL, they also have the second worst defense suddenly. If someone were to point out the weakness of the team and the reason that they might possibly miss the playoffs even with a powerful offense, it would be the pathetic play of the defense who don't look like they could even stop a mediocre High School offensive attack.

Typically when something isn't working right for a team, it's the coaches job to find the problem, come up with a solution and adjust to fix it. If the holes in your team aren't corrected, opponents will do everything they can to exploit those holes - and that's exactly what the Texans opponents are doing week in and week out. The problem is obvious. The fans, media and even Kubiak himself have point out how bad the defense is.

The obvious fix (or at least a way to help the problem so the Texans can have a playoff run) is to find a veteran corner who can actually cover receivers and someone to help out on the pass rush either through free agency or a trade.  But rather than fix it, Kubiak just acts like things will get better with time. He is hell bent on using inexperienced corners and guys like Mario Williams in the pass rush who I am honestly tired of hearing excuses for.

It's all about excuses with Kubiak and this years defense. First it was because Cushing was out. Then when we realized how bad the secondary was it's because "they are inexperienced." With Mario Williams it's because he is getting "double teamed" or "playing injured" (by the way, he get's called out next week). Against guys like Peyton Manning it's because the Colts were playing from behind so they had to pass a lot.

Excuses, excuses, excuses.  A good coach would come up with solutions and not excuses, Kubiak.

The bottom line is that Kubiak is too proud to change the direction he had decided to go with the defense. Bringing in a veteran corner to start over Jackson would admit that he made a wrong decision getting a corner back in the first round and expecting him to effectively start as a rookie or was wrong by not re-signing Dunta Robinson. People who are too proud really, really irritate me - and it appears that Kubiak is way too proud for his own good.

Gary Kubiak had better make something happen this week to shore up the defense. He has to make a move because it just isn't going to happen this year with the guys he has. Maybe Jackson and Quin are the guys for the future, but right now we need to focus on this season. With a looming lock-out next year, who knows if we will EVER have as strong an offense as this - so it's time to make things happen in the present and not worry about the future.

Kubiak - this is for your own good. Stop being too proud and come up with a solution. I still believe in you, but you are slipping. Fix it and don't make me do this again.
