The Texans made a number of roster moves today. The good news is that they were all moves for the defense. The bad news is that none of the moves that they made really does much to make the defense any better or help out with the pass defense.
Defensive Tackle Frank Okam was waived, which is pretty inconsequential since he hasn't made much of an impact since he came to the Texans from the University of Texas. Joining the team are linebacker Stanford Kegler and defensive tackles Damione Lewis and Malcolm Sheppard. While it is great that the Texans went after a few players, all of these guys shouldn't be much more than special teamers when it comes down to it.
In the words of the great Bernard Pollard, "Whooptie-Do."
What is highly disappointing is that the Texans staff didn't address the biggest weakness in the defense by going after anyone who would make a difference in the passing game. There a number of veteran defensive backs that could at least help the secondary be a little better. But for his reasons of being too proud or whatever it may be, Kubiak refused once again to go after anyone that would help.
About the only move that will help is a simple position change that will have Brian Cushing moving from strong side line backer to middle linebacker to fill the void left from the DeMeco Ryans injury. This move actually makes a lot of sense and could have a solid impact on the defense assuming Kevin Bently, Zac Diles and Xavier Adibi can play solid on the outside. Cushing will assume the leadership role wearing the helmet with the signals coming in from the coaching staff and calling the plays. I am not sure why this was so much a surprise to me as it makes a lot of sense now that the move has been made.
Looks like in order to win against the Colts next Monday, the offense is once again going to have to be the Texans best defense. While these roster moves are disappointing to say the least, I still think the Texans will bring it against an injury weakened Colts team and come away with a win.
