In the spirit of all of the national media outlets who've posted numerous Quarter Season awards, I have decided to name the Texans players who would make a Pro Bowl if it were based on the first four weeks of the season.
Quarter Season Pro Bowl Texans
Arian Foster - This is the obvious pick. He leads the league in rushing and has quickly burst onto the scene as an elite back. If voting were done a quarter of the way through the season, there is no doubt in my mind that Foster would be a unanimous selection.
Vonta Leach - It's hard to argue against Leach considering on almost every single big run that Foster breaks, Leach is leading the charge by smashing through the hole and leveling out linebackers. Add his talented hands to his blocking ability and there is no doubt he would be a clear choice for Pro Bowl Fullback.
Matt Schaub - While he isn't in the Top 3 of the AFC in total yards, Schaub makes the Quarter Season Pro Bowl because of his ability to command games and lead the team to victory. His stats aren't too shabby though. About 260 yards per game is nothing to scoff at. Oh yeah...then there was the game against the Redskins where he threw for nearly 500 yards. Schaub makes it in just behind Manning, but definitely ahead of Rivers, Orton or Palmer who are all ahead of him in yards.
Mario Williams - There is no doubt that Super Mario is in. Third in the NFL in sacks, Mario is on pace to have a record year with 20 sacks. Hey...it could happen. This year Mario has displayed a tenacity that we haven't seen in years passed and it's great to see. Hopefully he'll keep it up all season long making every Quarterback he faces hate life.
The Offensive Line - I've never been an expert on Offensive line items, but someone on the Texans Offensive Line would be going to the Pro Bowl - if not all five. Watching them block for Arian Foster has been like watching some sort of synchronized ballet of larger-than-life beasts. Since he is one of HoustonSportBlog.com's favorite Texans, we'll nominate Eric Winston as the leader of the Pro Bowl linemen.
Alternates Receiving Votes
Kevin Walter - Walter has made some big plays. Until week 4, he had scored in each game and leads the team in receptions.
Andre Johnson - The only reason Johnson is an alternate instead of making the team is because of his injury. Heck, he might have even made the team purely on his game winning catch against the Redskins. Although he just missed the Quarter Season Pro Bowl, there is no doubt in my mind, he'll been in the REAL one.
While the Quarter Season Pro Bowl may be a made up thing that doesn't mean diddly, it's fun to use as an evaluation tool for how the season is going. In a perfect world, using the first four weeks as a gauge, not only would you have the above players in the Pro Bowl, but the Texans would be 12-4, winners of the AFC South and have a bye into the playoffs. Foster would be a legitimate MVP candidate and Kubiak would be up for Coach of the Year.
So far...life is looking good for Texans fans. Now - BACK TO REALITY. Let's beat those Giants!
