Astros Add Clint Barmes to Team

The Astros have acquired 31 year old infielder Clint Barmes for Felipe Paulino today. This trade falls a few steps shy of trades that brought over Carlos Beltran, Randy Johnson or Jeff Bagwell. So what will we be getting in Barmes and losing in Paulino?

In Barmes
Through Fantasy baseball, I have come to know Barmes as a guy who enters the season making waves as a sleeper 2B. But he never starts the season in the starting lineup. He will come in about every other game and do OK, batting around .250. Then, Troy Tulowitzki will get injured. And Barmes will come in and hit 5 Home Runs in 5 games. Everyone will rush the waiver wire to pick him up thinking this is it. This is the year. Then he will hit 1 Home Run in the next 15 games and fall back into oblivion or get injured.

He's 31 years old and will probably be Geoff Blum 2.0. Nothing special, but not a total zero in the lineup. Will probably push Manzella, Sanchez or whoever else is inhabiting our middle infield. Then they will get injured, we will get super excited about Barmes for a week or two when he does really well, then he'll get hurt.

In Paulino
He has all of the tools to be awesome. In stretches he looks like he could have the best stuff on the planet. An awesome fastball and a nasty attitude. But he has had a problem keeping the ball in the park and staying healthy. He has a 5.83 Career era and has never made more than 17 starts in a season, but he does have over 8 k/9. He's still young-ish at 27, so he has a chance to put it all together. The Astros were going to have him compete for the #5 spot in the rotation. He could and probably will learn a lot from Ubaldo Jiminez and could come out a better pitcher.

Initial Verdict
Probably win for Rockies, but not surprising if it is a wash.
