First off let me admit that I hold Right Tackle Eric Winston in high regard as a Texans player and team member and have a ton of respect for him. That said, I heard something a little unnerving on his weekly appearance on Tuesday's on Sports Radio 610. I've often thought that perhaps the Texans players might consider spending less time appearing in shows throughout the week as it looks a little bit to fans like they are off playing around rather than preparing for their match-ups. This little nugget from Winston, is the bit that proves to me that these guys need to limit their radio appearances - (although I do believe he has a talent and a good career in radio in his future).
So what happened? I'll tell you in a nutshell...
As the hosts and Winston were discussing the reemergence of Vick as an elite or 2nd tier Quarterback, they got to each naming their picks for the best quarterbacks in the league that they would take on their teams. Naturally the hosts listed off Manning, Brady, Brees and Rivers as their top 4, but even Winston chimed in with these four as his top 4. He then started listing the top of his Tier 2 QB's that included Aaron Rogers, Michael Vick and Matt Ryan.
Anyone notice who is missing????!?!? It took one of the hosts to mention Matt Schaub's name and suddenly Winston is backing out, "Oh...yeah..of course. Matt Schaub is at the top of that list."
To me this shows a lack of faith in your own leader that he doesn't come to mind or you don't even think to "tongue-in-cheek" mention him first. Even though you and everyone else know that Manning and Brady are a step above him, you should still always have your own leader come to mind without question. As smart and talented as Winston is, I can only imagine what the mind set is of some of the guys who aren't as strong as him. Do they have faith in Schaub as their leader?
This may be over criticizing and off the cuff conversation, but it is a little unnerving and may explain why there seems to be a lack of fire and emotion for the Texans this year.
