To try and fill some of the void of experience in their secondary, the Texans picked up corner back Jason Allen off of waivers today. Allen brings 5 years of experience to the secondary adding more game time experience than the top 3 corners on the Texans depth chart combined. He may not come in as a starter, but he will immediately fill in for injured Dominique Barber on special teams and most likely give Glover Quin and/or Kareem Jackson rest during games - meaning they will have less of a chance of getting burned.
Either way you look at it, adding Allen does "plus" the Texans defense. For those who don't know much about him, let's take a look...
Jason Allen - CB #32
- Height: 6-1 Weight: 200 Age: 27
- Born: 07/05/1983 in Muscle Shoals , AL
- College: Tennessee
- Experience: 5th Season
- Other Teams: Dolphins
- Draft Status: 2006 - First Round pick (16th)
- Career Accomplishments & Awards: Allen has played under the radar for the past 5 years, but is a very solid starter at corner back. At Tennessee he was a semi-finalist for the Jim Thorpe award as well as a third team All-American in 2004.
- Strength: He brings experience to a very inexperienced Texans secondary. With only 19 games started over the past 5 years, Allen has only missed actually appearing in 1 game which happened during the 2008 season. The missed game was a coaches decision, so he hasn't missed any play time with injuries making his durability a definite strength. He is also a fast corner who has a ton of closing speed. Allen already has 3 interceptions thus far this year.
- Weakness: This was Allen's first year as a full time starter. Many have the wonder if he is a full time starter or a nickel back. He really has yet to truly prove himself as a starting corner in the NFL.
- Trivia & Extras: Follow Jason Allen on twitter. Arian Foster was a former teammate as Allen. He was a freshman at Tennessee when Allen was a senior in 2006.
