And Now For the Glass Half Empty Post

Trey offered up the optimistic view of the Texans 2011 hopes. The best he could muster was a glass half full overview and sadly with Gary "Half Assed" Kubiak, half full or half empty is the best he can do. He is mediocrity personified.

In 2009, with a middle of the road defense (14th in total yards, 17th in points) , we still failed to make the playoffs. When the weaknesses in the team were identified, the Texans failed to address the concerns in the secondary, taking the 11th best cornerback in the draft when rookie Pro Bowler Devin McCourty was sitting there for the taking. It was said that the Texans truly desired Ryan Mathews, but Rick Smith failed to find a package to entice a team to give up the draft position to get him. Instead the Chargers made a play and got the guy they wanted.

I mentioned in a blog article at the beginning of the 2010 season, we were set for a long season based on one quote from Kubiak:

“We’ve made progress as a football team. Regardless of the few Pro Bowlers that we had and the quarterback leading the NFL in throwing and all that good stuff that’s been going on, we still were not good enough as a group to get into the playoffs." -- Gary Kubiak 8/18/2010
In that one quote, he set the standard that it is OK to lose. In that one quote, he tells us everything that is wrong with the Texans atmosphere right now. In that one quote he tells us why the glass isn't half full. He tells us that with him at the helm there is no way in hell that glass will ever be full. Like I said before, do you think the good coaches would ever say they weren't good enough to get to the playoffs? Do you think anybody thought the Chiefs had the talent to get to the playoffs? No. What about the Rams? No. Do the Raiders have 8-8 talent? For that matter do the Patriots have World Champion talent? No. But what they do have is innovative coaches who take the professional athletes and find ways to utilize that talent to get the job done.
Kubiak has no clue how to evaluate talent. He knows offense. But its more than the numbers. Its about creating a culture of winning. Its about finding answers in unlikely solutions. Every team has pro caliber talent on their team. Gary Kubiak just doesn't have the ability to recognize how to make his talent win them enough games.

It does no good to panic or complain, but we should all be very realistic in approaching how we take in the 2011 season, if there is one. There will be poor personnel decisions. There will be a culture where losing is OK. And a defensive coordinator can't make that go away. And Kubiak won't magically develop into a leader. So, enjoy the half glass, but don't expect it to magically become full before next season.

  1. While you speak a lot of valid points, I do believe Kubiak COULD take the experiences from last year and grow. The players are behind him 110% and to me, that says something that we don't get to see as outsiders.

Is it likely? No. But it's possible.

Since we are stuck with him, I am choosing to cross my fingers and roll forward with it in hopes that the defense will become strong enough to stop opposing teams from scoring so they counteract the 3 or 4 terrible game decision Kubiak will make each week.

I try not to read too much into quotes because I say things all the time that I wouldn't want people to read too far into. In listening to Kubiak each week in his press conferences and radio interviews...it is very apparent that he is NOT content with being a loser or mediocre. I expect him to at least attempt to prove you wrong next year.
